Abstract

The contemporary theater draws from the world fragments of concrete reality on which it bases both theoretical dynamics and scenic processes, thus allowing professional actors and “social actors” to interact with unprecedented methods. The result is a theater “of the people” embedded in the concept of “presence”. Bertolt Brecht’s theater describes a path that highlights previous forms and motivations for the current interpenetrations. In this contribution, three aspects will be taken into account. First, we identify the premises of Bertolt Brecht’s turning point in previous debates around agitprop groups of the Weimar Republic. Secondly, we will try to examine the statements of the German dramatist in the name of a theory and a practice focused on the “street scene”. Finally, we will evaluate, with a focus on South America and Italy, the contributions provided by Brecht to the development and contamination of theatrical experiences that embrace the realities of living.
