Marco Milani is a Research Fellow in Asian History and Institutions at the Department of the Arts, University of Bologna. He was previously a Lecturer at the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Korean Studies Institute at the University of Southern California. He also held teaching positions at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (South Korea), and was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies (South Korea) and the Leiden Institute for Area Studies (Netherlands). He has published numerous articles in scholarly journals and volume essays on contemporary Korean history, Korean foreign policy, inter-Korean relations, and cultural production in contemporary Korea. He is co-editor of The Korean Paradox: domestic political divide and foreign policy in South Korea (Routledge, 2019) and co-author of Asia. History, Institutions and International Relations (Mondadori Education, 2022).

Abstract

The global success of South Korea’s cultural and artistic production is one of the most significant phenomena of recent years, not only for the study of the Korean peninsula but also for the broader analysis of the dynamics of cultural and social processes at the global level. The reasons that have led to this success are several and have their roots in the historical and political development, at times tragic, that the country had to face during the Twentieth century. To fully understand and appreciate how contemporary Korean artistic and cultural production has transformed and developed, it is therefore necessary to present a historical reconstruction of the main stages that have characterized South Korea’s contemporary history and an in-depth analysis of how these dynamics have been crucial in influencing the artistic and cultural evolution of the country.
