Leonardo Delfanti is a freelance journalist specialising in theatre criticism, crisis journalism and cultural diplomacy. In the past, he has been a theatre and dance performer for several European companies. He has a degree in Philosophy (University of Verona), a diploma in contemporary dance (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance), one in Forced Displacement (UPEACE) and an MA in Crisis and War Journalism (University of Thessaloniki). He has collaborated with the European Federation of Journalists, the UNESCO Youth Newsroom, the Nobel Peace Summit and DCN Global on several occasions. He has published with Pane Acqua Culture, ArtTribune, Caucasus Watch, Domani, Gli Stati Generali, Atlas of Wars and Transitions as a reporter. In November 2022, he spent a month in Armenia documenting the effects of the conflict over the control of Nagorno-Karabakh on the civilian population and Armenian society.

Abstract

The prolonged conflict for Nagorno-Karabakh has profoundly impacted the culture and identity of Armenia. Overtaken militarily by Azerbaijan, Armenia has sought to preserve its national identity by enhancing its intangible cultural heritage (ICH). This strategy, launched through the revision of the 2003 UNESCO Convention, opened new perspectives in heritage representation, focusing on ethnographic rather than topographical principles. This text aims to analyse the relationship between UNESCO, Armenia and the conflict for Nagorno-Karabakh, focusing on the candidacy of the duduk as ICH and its role in defending the Armenian national identity.
